Your Questions About Ladies Shoes Size 13

Carol asks…

How do I build up a portfolio/resume for a modeling agency?

I want to do some modeling; i'm not victoria's secret material but I want to see how far it takes me. Seeing as i'm majoring in fashion design, I thought it might be helpful. I don't know exactly where to start however-would I look for gigs on craigslist? or is craigslist usually "iffy" business?

Our pick of the answers:

Unfortunately, having experience in fashion design wont help you in the world of modeling. Its a very superficial world, and one of the most competitive youll come across- you have to have the looks, the height and the body or you wont be able to do it. It kind of has to choose you, in other words. To start, agencies are super selective. They all state on their website that only girls who fall within a certain height and size range should apply- the rest will be weeded out. Unless its a commercial agency (which signs "real-people" as models, not "model looking" models), that height minimum will be 5'8, although 5'9 or taller is preferred, and you must wear a size 2 or 4 or 12+ if they have a plus-size division. You will also need to send your measurements in, so youll want to get those and know them off the top of your head. If you are within an inch or 2 of 33-24-34, thats good- thats what they require (again unless youre going for plus, but you still have to have excellent proportions- that means hips and bust should be the same measurement or within an inch of each other and waist exactly 10 inches smaller). You also have to have the face of course, which means you must stand out in a sea of gorgeous girls also sending in their photos. Looking for gigs on craigslist is not a good idea- more than 75% of them will be scams, or illegitimate modeling (nude, bar girls, etc), and none will look impressive on a resume. Most models who submit to agencies dont have a resume, and are in their teens. If youre already in college youre a llittle "old" to be starting out as a model, to tell you the truth. Most models start between the ages of 13 and 16. As for a portfolio, agencies dont require you send one in; if you look on their websites under "submit", they will have the exact instructions and what you need to do so. This is usually just a few snapshots, but you must follow their directions carefully- they typically ask for a head and shoulders shot, a full body swimsuit shot and a waist-up shot, and some also require a profile. They always want you to wear no makeup, even if you are sending in a portfolio- they also want shots without you being all done up so they can see YOU. If you fit the body/height/size mold, send in your snapshots, measurements, height, dress/shoe size and inseam (some ask for it, some dont; i always included it on my comp cards. To model, the general minimum inseam is 34 inches or longer- basically a 2 or 4 long in pants for straight models, or a 10+ long for plus) to every legit agency in your area- you must live within 100 miles of them. Watch out for scams; if you dont live in a major fashion city (chicago, miami, la or nyc), many of the "agencies" youll come across arent really agencies at all, and will end up ripping you off (plenty of them exist in the big fashion cities too though, so be very cautious no matter where you live). Its a tough business to get into, even if you just want to dabble in it. You kind of either have it or you dont. I find that people generally have the wrong idea of what different types of modeling require; many seem to think that anyone who is pretty can model, and you only have to be tall for runway- that isnt the case. You must be tall for all kind of modeling, unless youre going for commercial. People also seem to think that brands like maybelline, clean and clear, etc (beauty brands, clothing brands) hire commercial girls, which isnt the case either- they hire fashion models. Commercial is more like the older lady you will see in an ad for an osteoporosis drug, etc.

Lisa asks…

Can someone help crossdress me for a party?

I am going to a halloween party on the 16th. I need a girly costume idea - and I want to do a complete makeover. Please pick a costume, appropriate makeup, suitable underwear (panty and bra) and anywhere I could get size 11 heels. Any suggestions would much appreciated. I am a male, 120lbs - 5'8" waist size 28 show size 11 As always a best answer = 10 points

Our pick of the answers:

With your size and weight, I would suggest going dressed as a STYLISH LADY. This is as opposed to going looking like a street walker. After explaining your reason for needing help, get a female friend to help you select a really nice looking outfit - maybe something like a business woman's outfit - and also help you with makeup when the time comes. Don't forget nail polish and if you're wearing a dress/skirt that shows your legs you will need to shave them to be convincing. An appropriate wig is also a necessity. As far as shoes are concerned, since you're a size 11 in a man's shoe, you'll need a 13 in a woman's size since there is almost always a two size difference between the two. You might get lucky and find these at a Salvation Army or Goodwill store. Otherwise, start looking in Pay-Less stores since most of those stock some of the larger sizes.
