Your Questions About Stilettos Knife

Lizzie asks…

are italian switchblade knives or stilettos illegal in north carolina?

I want to know because i want to get one myself and to also to tell my dad if they are or not because he says they are but he also think that they aren't also but to be sure i would like for someone to tell me.

Our pick of the answers:

"Is it legal?" is a multi-part question. First, a switchblade and a stiletto are two different things. A switchblade is a knife that opens using a spring when you press a button. A "stiletto" is a style of knife that may or may not be a switchblade. The stiletto style means it has a long, very skinny blade, and is most often associated with the Italian designed pocket knives that have little crossbars. Now, you can own either of them and keep that at home, that is certain. No state in the US restricts private ownership of knives save a select few cities. Can you carry a switchblade out in public? No you cannot, it is illegal. Can you carry a non-switchblade stiletto? Yes you can, they are considered pocket knives and therefore legal, though avoid anything longer than 4.5 inches as the police generally are suspicious of huge blades. While buying a non-automatic stiletto is no problem, buying a switchblade can be quite difficult due to Federal law. According to this law, you cannot buy them over state lines. So you must either buy one from a person inside North Carolina, or you must travel to a state where they are legal and buy one there in-person.

Sharon asks…

I am shopping for an Italian Stiletto knife and need help.?

A lot of the handle's material are listed as "Black Horn" and "Pearlex" and I was just wondering what these materials are. Are they wood, plastic, etc? Thank you.

Our pick of the answers:

Horn is part of an animal made of keratin. It is not wood. Black horn is either genuine animal horn coloured black or a synthetic version. Pearlex is a material that has a lustrous texture similar to pearls. It can be made from certain sheels, but this is quite brittle, so may well be a synthetic man made version. So it could be a plastic.
