Your Questions About Shoes For Women With High Arches

Sandy asks…

Pointe shoe fitting question...?

I was out of ballet for 5 years for ankle and knee surgeries, and since I've been back for about a year, my teacher and I agreed to start pointe work again... The only problem is that I can't seem to find shoes that are appropriate. My ankles are extremely flexible, I have high arches and very strong feet, tapered toes ("Egyptian" feet), narrow heel, and wear a 10.5 W in women's shoes. I used to wear Baryshnikov pointe shoes (I stocked up, and they last forever, but I am now out.) I wore the Extra Strong shanks (and still bent the life out of them) Size: 7.5E Here's a description: http://www.the-perfect-pointe.com/Baryshnikov.html I've tried: Fuzi full and 3/4 shanks - I've only worn these for 30 minutes, with hardly any break-in, and the shanks are already pretty much dead. This pic is pretty self-explanatory: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3395/3519887714_880119ac6e.jpg?v=0 Capezio Contempora - I kill the shoe in about three hours (the box falls apart, and the shanks get smushy) But I did like the flexibility of the shank under the ball of the foot on pointe. I don't have a pic since these went in the trash. Size: 8E I was fitted with Bloch Suprima's once, but they felt too tapered. Does anyone know a comparable shoe to the Baryshnikov's/Soloists? Or can make a recommendation as to another shoe that would work? Help Please? Thanks! =o)

Our pick of the answers:

Gamba's are good. There are freeds as well, I don't like them though, because I found them too hard, but them again I loved the bloch suprimas, so yaano (:

Lizzie asks…

What could be wrong with my knee/hip?

So a little back story: I have high arches and small feet (5.5 or 6 women's). I have limited mobility because of the size and arches of my feet. I have personalized inserts that I wear in my athletic shoes when I exercise. I ended up getting those because my feet have the tendency to go numb when I do high impact exercises. I did run for a little while, but my right knee was giving me trouble so I stopped (that was over a year ago). So, over the past 6 months my right knee pain has gotten worse. Anytime I wear heels to work (not even HIGH heels) my knee ends up giving me a fit when I get home from work. Then my right hip starts to hurt as well. Today I went to the mall and I even wore flats and now I'm sitting on the couch with my thigh throbbing, the right side and top of my knee is hot and aching, and my hip is pinching pretty badly. My right knee pops really often and every once in a while if I turn my leg too quickly I can feel a tendon twist over my knee cap. Last week I bent down to pick something up and I could feel my hip slip out of place, it was quite painful. Did I mention I'm only 26 years old? Jeez, I hate to see me when I'm 50. Could my knee issue be causing my hip issue, or vice versa? Should I go to an orthopedist?

Our pick of the answers:

Popping and snapping within the knee is quite common, and often not a symptom of any particular problem. When the pops or snaps are painless, there is usually no problem--the bigger concern is when these sounds are associated with pain. A pop is often heard or felt when a ligament, such as the ACL, is torn. Http://orthopedics.about.com/od/hipknee/a/kneesymptoms.htm
