Your Questions About Stilettos Lyrics

Nancy asks…

What to wear for singing competition?

My 16 years old sister is successfully qualified for her final in singing competition. She is planning to sing a sentimental song which lyric read about singer is complimenting someone is very special. She is petite, long black hair and has thin body size. Should dress reflects her song/genre? Anyone can suggest how she should dress for her performance for her final?

Our pick of the answers:

She should show in her face and voice what the lyrics mean rather than rely on any costume. She should dress as herself-- BUT she should dress UP. A nice dress, preferably floor length, but at least knee length (if you are elevated on stage, a short dress is more revealing than you think it is to whomever is in the front row). Since she is petite, it's best to keep the outline of the dress simple---no big poofs, no oversized skirts, etc. She may wear any color as long as it isn't florescent or covered in large, distracting patterns or sequins (small pattern is okay, some sequins to sparkle here and there okay but not the ENTIRE outfit). She may wear her hair down or up or pulled back, but it does need to be away from her face. If she wears makeup normally, she can wear it for the competition but try to keep the colors light and fresh. Not the time for Goth, in other words. If she doesn't wear makeup, she might put on a little for practical reasons. Sheer powder will take any shine of the face. A touch of mascara can bring out the eyes. A clear gloss or chapstick is practical because your lips can get dry if you're nervous. She should wear dressy shoes, which can be plain pumps either flats or a slight heel if she is used to heels. No six-inch stilettos or one-foot platform shoes that might make you fall. On the other hand the clothes, however dressier than she might normally wear, should be comfortable. No scratchy fabrics. No synthetics that won't breathe if she perspires a bit. Nothing too tight that she can't breathe in. In other words, her clothing should not distract either her or her audience (and certainly not the judges) from her singing!

Ruth asks…
