Mary asks…
How to wear brass knuckle heels without looking like a prostitute?
I am going to a formal event and intend on wearing a pair of shoes that have brass knuckles as heels. How do I wear these without looking like an inexpensive prostitute?
Our pick of the answers:
Wear all leather and you'll look like a dominatrix instead. ^_^
Sandy asks…
How can I learn to walk in high heels without damaging my legs or my shoes?
My prom is in less than 2 months. I'm getting medium-height heels to go with my dress, but I need to learn to walk in them, without having to go to prom with a sprained ankle.
Our pick of the answers:
Yeah walking on carpet is a great way to start out. That way you'll have good traction and cushion. If you've never warn heels before, you've got plenty of time to get used to them. I'd say walk around the house in them at least for a few minutes each day, or an hour or so if you do it every few days. You'll become more used to the new position of your foot, and the stamina in your ankles will improve. Your biggest worry should actually be blisters rather than a sprained ankle, when you practice your skin will get used to the rubbing and you MIGHT get a small callous or two, don't worry about those too much since they only pop up where something rubs the skin, and if something's rubbing the skin it means it's covered so no one can see it. Washing it gently and applying lotion after prom will help the callous go away faster if you happen to get one. Once you're comfortable walking on carpet try tile. If you're gravitationally impaired like me, you'll want to stick close to a wall or something until you get the hang of placing your heel down on the floor without slipping. Tips: If your shoes are light colored, be sure to wash your feet very good before practicing, or wear some nylons or those silly brown sock things you use at the shoe store to try on shoes, that way the color stays clean. When you switch from carpet to tile, you'll want to take much smaller steps and slowly work your way to bigger steps. If you take a step that's too big your heel might not grip the floor and you could end up doing a split - quite painful, even if your a cheer leader because it happens so fast, lol. Practice walking at different times of the day, when you first wake up, after you've been sitting, laying, and/or walking for a while - since feet swell and constrict throughout the day and depending on your activity level. Feel free to experiment with baby powder and fashion tape (also goes by the name of "double sided tape"). Baby powder on top of the toes should help prevent blisters and the tape will help straps stay in place - but don't wait til the day of to try these, sometimes the tape likes to move and roll up and stick out the side of the shoe! If your shoes are a little bigger head over to the dollar store, they've got cushions for the balls of the feet, and gripper things for the heels (if you've got the type that has closed heels) If you're going to wear a long skirt practice wearing the entire outfit a few times to make sure nothing gets stepped on. Especially if you'll be going up and down stairs. Before prom, think about taking a pain reliever to prevent discomfort, or slip some into your purse. I wouldn't do this though if you plan on drinking during the night though, since pills and alcohol don't mix well. (Yes, I did notice you said prom and all the prudes are thinking 'where could there possibly be alcohol?' so here I'll insert my adult-like warning - Alcohol is for adults and should not be consumed before the age of 21! However I know the truth of youth and that everyone's going to do what they want anyway, so even if you don't wear your brain be sure to tuck it into your purse!) Have fun at prom, and good luck with your shoes. Practice practice practice!
