What kind of stone should I use on this knife?

I am buying a falcon damascus stiletto, and I was wondering what kind of stone I should use to sharpen it. Would a stone of the sort you'd find at a hardware store mark the blade? I was thinking about an Arkansas stone, but I don't know if I should get soft or hard.

You could also buy a diamond stone which will make quick work of the blade. The best, in my opinion, are water stones. Unfortunately, they are more expensive and you usually need more of them. For instance, I have a variety of stones starting with an 80 grit diamond for rough shaping and sharpening, up to an 8000 grit water stone, which can restore a mirror finish. Then you have to buy stones to make sure your stones stay flat. So it gets expensive and isn't worth it for most people. As important as what type of abrasive to use is to use it correctly. Use a angle guide (supplied with some stones) to keep a correct angle, and to keep from scratching the sides of the blade. Sharpening a knife will decrease it's value, but incorrectly sharpening one can ruin it. Hope this helps, Alan

What constitutes lawful use of a knife against another person?

Illinois knife law states: A person commits the offense of unlawful use of weapons when he knowingly... (2) Carries or possesses with intent to use the same unlawfully against another, a dagger, dirk, billy, dangerous knife, razor, stiletto, broken bottle or other piece of glass... or any other dangerous or deadly weapon of like character... So, what would be "lawful" use against another? Using one of these objects in self-defense against an unarmed person would be lawful?

A lawful use would be use in self defense, provided that use of deadly force was justified under the laws of that jurisdiction. However, I see some items on that list that you can't even lawfully possess, and use in self defense would not shield you from prosecution under those other statutes.
