Your Questions About Stilettos Knife

Carol asks…

Im a minor and i live in calfornia and want to buy a knife as a tool, will i be allowed to?

So i been eyeing a pretty cheap and cool looking smith and wesson knife over at big 5 sporting goods and i been needing one anyway for my tool kit because im taking a shop class over at my high school over the weekends to gain some work experience in construction. Anyway im 17 years old and im not familiar with the knife laws here in California. Would they be able to sell me one? I hate borrowing my shop teacher's knife all the time, even though he says he doesn't mind i'd still like my own. I could either buy it and big 5 sporting goods or at an indoor swap meet. Will i be allowed to buy one? I won't get in trouble with the law or anything will i?

Our pick of the answers:

There are no California state laws regulating knife possession by age. The law is unclear on knife possession at school. Pen C 626.10 generally prohibits dirks, daggers, and knives with blades over 2.5 inches long on school grounds. However, there is an exception for knives with blades over 2.5 inches long possessed at the direction of a teacher for use in class. The problem is that there is no exception for dirks and daggers of any length, and the California Supreme Court has defined dirks and daggers to include all fixed blade knives. I think it is pretty obvious that the Legislature intended the exception to apply to all knives other than "stiletto" type dirks, but it is possible that Pen C 626.10 could be interpreted as banning ALL fixed blade knives on school grounds. The interesting thing about this is that if the unclear law is interpreted to preclude possession of a fixed-blade knife without exception, and your teacher's knife fits that description, HE is in violation of the law as well. At any rate, unless you live in a community which has its own laws concerning possession of knives by minors you will have no trouble buying a knife.

Helen asks…

How much is this knife worth?

My dad found a knife in his stuff from when he was a child and we're trying to figure out the value of it. It has Rostfrei Italy on the blade. Here's a pic of it: http://postimage.org/image/4kc13oc19/ Thanks for your time!

Our pick of the answers:

It's a stiletto. It is not possible to tell the value from the picture, as a closer inspection would be necessary... Some older stilettos are worth hundreds of dollars to collectors, but others are worth only a few dollars, if that... It really depends on the brand, and the condition, and to a certain extent on the age...... But the word "Rostfrei" is not a brand. It is simply German for "stainless steel"...... I sell knives at biker swapmeets and several of them, by a number of makers, both "cheap", and "better quality", have the word "Rostfrei" on the choil or the blade.
