On August 29th, 2010, mixed-media artist, Amanda Dolan, will unveil her latest creations in a flirty new fashionesque series entitled "Dress Up," making this her 5th exhibition to show at the Ward Nasse Gallery in New York City.
"Dress Up" will introduce a darker, edgier side of Dolan (think: less rainbows, more bondage), surprising those who have seen her happier works in recent exhibits like "Precious Things," and "Heart Attack."
Seeking new inspiration, Dolan—always a fashionista and trendsetter in her own right—spent the past year immersed in New York's deeply competitive fashion industry, working as a stylist for her favorite label, Betsey Johnson, at the flagship store in SoHo.
Currently honored as the company's "Pink Spotlight Stylist," Dolan has had the honor of styling rocker celebrities like supermodel Paulina Porizkova and husband Ric Ocasek of The Cars, and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode.
"Working at Betsey, we are playing dress up all day long, surrounded by beautiful clothes, textures, and fabrics," explains Dolan, "Women want to look their best. We can be so girlie and feminine, but at the same time, so brave. Beauty is pain. Corsets are pain. High heels are pain. But we put ourselves through it. And, I wanted to explore that."
Motivated by the darker, historical side of fashion, and how closely art and fashion overlap when it comes to textures, imagery, and color palettes, "Dress Up" was born. This flirty collection includes paintings in new shapes and sizes, using Dolan's signature collage technique with papers, photocopies, textures, resin and paint to fuse the old with the new. Corsets, vintage garments, measuring tapes, sewing, and shoes make their subtle appearances in these pieces, illustrating the emotion and mood that fashion represents.
