Your Questions About Commandant

Susan asks…

Who was the first Commandant of the Marines to be impeached?

The only thing I know is that it was in the 1800s Thank you for your help

Our pick of the answers:

Major Anthony Gale was fired but not impeached. This can not be done. As an interesting aside, his burial place is unknown. It is a tradition of the Corps to place flowers on the graves of former commandants on "The Birthday." His is the only grave not so decorated. There is also no official likeness of him at Eighth and I.

Mary asks…

Is there a difference between a commandant and a commander?

i'm talking about ranks... and if there are differences, which ones are they?

Our pick of the answers:

The 2 words are interchangable. In the US Armed Forces there are 2 that carry the title, they are: Commandant of the Marine Corps Commandant of the Coast Guard A Commander, as others have stated, is simply the officer in charge of a unit. This is what the dictionary has to say about commandant: The commanding officer of a military organization. And commander: A person who commands, especially a commanding officer. (Abbr. CDR) A commissioned rank in the U.S. Navy or Coast Guard that is above lieutenant commander and below captain. One who holds this rank. The chief commissioned officer of a military unit regardless of his or her rank. An officer in some knightly or fraternal orders. Lots of words, no difference! SSG US Army 73-82
