Laura asks…
Does anyone know how a meritorious promotion is scored in the Marine Corps?
i.e. How many points for each MCI, Commandant's Reading List books, PFT, Rifle score, etc.
Our pick of the answers:
That is not what a meritorious promotion is. What you describe is a normal promotion. Meritorious promotions are awarded by special promotion boards to outstanding Marines who do not have the points to be promoted normally. The Marine is nominated by his OIC or SNOIC to go before the board where his service record is reviewed, his military bearing and appearance judged and he is tested on his general military knowledge. It is a competitive process. There are always more candidates than there are promotion slots.

Writing assignment The Devils Arithmatic?
After reading chapter 16 it is learned that Yitzhak's small son, Reuven, is chosen by the commandant. The commandant makes a cruel joke of this small, defenseless child. Hannah is overwhelmed that she didn't act differently in order to save this innocent little boy. Pretend that you are Hannah at the camp when the commandant drives up and sees Reuven coming out of the hospital. Write a letter that convinces the Nazi commandant that this blameless and motherless child does not need to be chosen to go with him. Begin by listing any and all possible arguments you can think that you could use in this instance. Decide which are your strongest arguments, and which are less substantial. Organize your points from weaker to strongest and jot down anything you can think of that will support or explain your arguments. Begin your letter with an introductory paragraph in which you express your intent to take responsibility for and look after Reuven for the remainder of his life. Follow that with one paragraph for each of the main points you have to support your argument to convince Breuer to release Reuven to your care. Support your arguments with reasons and feelings that support your main point. Then, write a concluding paragraph that summarizes your commitment to Reuven's well-being and your continued service to the commandant's wishes and the Fatherland as your final statement.
