Your Questions About Heels With Spikes

Why are stewardesses not allowed spike heels (has to do with psi)?

The answer's got to do with pressure exerted by the heel, but I'm not sure why being in an airplane makes a difference.

The formula to cite is Pressure = Force/Area. Wearing a spiked heel means they are applying their weight to a small area. The smaller the area, the higher the pressure. So when they step on someone's foot in a high heel, there is a lot of pressure and it hurts! Being in an airplane makes it worse because it is cramped so its more likely that they WILL step on someone's foot!

Suppose two women each have a mass of 50 kg. if one woman is wearing shoes with spiked heels and the?

other is wearing work boots, which one exerts more pressure on the floor with each step? Explain

The woman with the heels exerts more pressure on the floor with each step. The women have the same mass and are under the same gravitational force. However the woman wearing heels is using less surface area to exert that force than the woman wearing boots. So the force per unit area is higher for the woman in heels.
