Maria asks…
Tea at the Ritz?
What should I wear for tea at the Ritz in London. The dresscode is formal (men wear ties). Any suggestions? Will something like black trousers, court shoes and tailored white shirt work, or do I need to bling it up more?
Our pick of the answers:
I personally wouldn't wear black and white - you'll be taken for a waitress! Wear something you feel comfortable in so you don't feel all hot and bothered. A jacket with the trousers and shoes mentioned and a vest underneath with some jewellery in whatever style you like best would be OK. I often buy some nice beads/earrings and maybe a new bag to bling up an otherwise plainish outfit. Another thing I find is having my nails done makes me feel well-groomed. Also, clean, shiny hair. Relax and Enjoy!
Mandy asks…
My boss fired me today for no real reason, can I take it to court?
I work at a small shoe store called Star Shoes, and today my manager was voicing her opinion on drugs. She basically started that drugs kill everyone who touches them. I retaliated, but not in a rude way, or even in a way that would offend her. She became very angry and demanded me to look her in the eyes and tell her whether or not I do drugs. I told her that our relationship is professional and she doesn't have the right to ask me personal questions. She then went so far as to say to me that since I didn't answer her question, I do drugs. Her exact words were "No wonder you're so zoned out all the time, you do drugs." In truth I have had horrible insomnia ever since my best friends committed suicide, and has gotten worse due to the fact that my dad is terminally ill. I am on prescribed sleeping medication which occasionally makes me feel drowsy. She fired me then and there, saying that "everyone" says I'm rude, which I find hard to believe because I get along with all the other co-workers very well, and I'm nice to everybody and I keep my personal stresses out of my workplace. She also said that she's firing me because I was scheduled to come in at 2:30 for 3 days, but I couldn't because my mom was in the hospital with my dad so she couldn't drive me, and the bus ride is much longer so I ended up coming in at 3:30. Point is I called in advance and she said this was fine. She also told me she doesn't hire men, so I'm pretty sure that's discrimination in the work place... and she tells me to watch black people. She disgusts me, and I want to take her to court for what she did. No two weeks notice either, her exact words were "get out, you're fired."
Our pick of the answers:
In usa, an employer can fire you on a whim, but she can not violate your rights. If she violated your rights, as the first answerer suggested, then you can take her to court anyway. There are many rights that employers can not violate, and although I'm not sure what all of them are, they are available to look up online and at the library, and also at many community employment offices, for free. Try googling workers rights, or workers rights and the name of your state, county, or town. All usually have workers laws. Just remember that not all local laws are applicable, because county laws over rule town laws, and state laws over rule county, and federal laws over rule state laws. Any time an employer violates your rights, you can take them to court. Their right to fire you on a whim does not eliminate your other rights. (check your contract to see what kind of court to take your case too, as many mandate arbitration court.)
