Your Questions About Stilettos

Mary asks…

what is the proper way to walk in 4 inch stiletto heels?

Allright i want to know why i got a huge pain in my feets and toes after i wore my 4 inch stilettos to school? I felt so bad when walking downstairs from the 3rd floor. What is the proper way to walk in stilettos so it doesn't hurt? Should i use the Elevator?

Our pick of the answers:

There's really no way to explain how to in writing over the Internet; it would be easier to show. But anyway, the only way to learn how to properly walk in heels is to get there gradually. Start off with wedges or pumps, 1 inch, then 2, then 3... Until you get up to 4 inch stilettos. You can't just jump right from flats to high stilettos like that without looking ridiculous and/or being in a lot of pain. But if you MUST, you have to sway your hips more than you normally would (not for the effect of being sexy, but simply because you HAVE to if you want it to work), and do remember to ALWAYS walk heel-toe.

Susan asks…

How does the spring mechanism in a stiletto blade work?

No, I'm not building a knife. However I /am/ building a larger scale type of implement for a prop. Sadly I don't understand much about mechanics and therefore am useless when it comes to this part. Basically I'm building a narrow sword that appears and disappears within a spring loaded handle. A stiletto blade is the closest thing I have been able to find that explains what I want it to do. So... how does the mechanism work? Would it be easy enough to build? OR... do you have any other suggestions? Thanks. Could you possible attach a diagram with what you mean so that I can understand? Like I said I'm not all that versed in this area. Thanks.

Our pick of the answers:

"appears and disappears within a spring loaded handle" You do understand that a stiletto appears with a spring action, and then locks out and it has to be pushed back into the handle? (Besides being illegal in most jurisdictions) There is no practical way to make the blade zip out and back under power of a spring. When they seem to do it in the movies it is either done by a gaffer hiding behind the actor pushing and pulling rods (like the famous sliding doors on StarTrek) or by exchanging the handle with the pop out mechanism for one with pop in. Or just shooting the pop out and reversing the film.
