Your Questions About Shoes For Women Online

Ruth asks…

If i'm a size 6/7 in UK shoe size what size is equivalent in American sizes?

I want to buy a flat pair of shoes (women's) and in some shoes in a 6 and others a 7. The shoes I want to buy half only whole number sizes.

Our pick of the answers:

If you are a 6/7 in the UK, you are basically a 8.5/9.5 in the US. Although different designers and manufacturers will cut shoes differently and it's difficult with shoe sizes. Some websites suggest ordering up a half size beyond the conversion. So, if you are a size 6 or 7 UK, ordering a size 8.5 or 9.5 US/Canada would work, or even a size 10. The same size is considered (European) shoe size 40, Japanese would be 25, and Mexican would be 26. UK to US shoe size conversion: http://www.ukshoesizeconversion.com/articles/122313/UK-Shoe-Size-Conversion Just how clothing is cut differently, so are shoes. Some styles run large..some run small. For instance, Ugg boots run large. (people will order a size smaller than they usually take). In general, flats run kind of small. It wouldn't hurt to go UP a size with flats (especially if they are pointy). I wear a 7.5 ~ 8 US. I buy 39 or even 40 in little, Asian Jellies. I usually buy a 7 or 8 with Uggs. It's up for grabs with Italian shoes. Italian boots I will usually go a size up (at least) since everything runs very small. Anything from Japan I go up. I usually have to try them on when I'm shopping in different countries or in a shop in the US that carries Italian shoes. Many shoes I have are from Spain and that's an entirely different conversion. It really IS difficult to get this right, especially since there is no way to get it right. The best one can do when shopping online is to contact the website and ASK about how the shoes run. Most are helpful about this kind of thing. If they are NOT helpful with information, one would be wise to check out their return policy. Make sure they allow returns if the shoe doesn't fit. Searching the website and determining if they have notes re: the shoe running small, large or is 'true to size' would be a good idea. Send them an email at their 'contact us' page..and ask them, specifically, if their sizes run 'true to size'. Some sites will take your foot measurement in centimeters. Most (all) websites try to help with this process as much as they can, since it's a hassle for both the seller as well as the buyer to have to go through the return/exchange process, if the shoe doesn't fit. Better to ASK in an email vs. Ordering a flat that runs too small, or too large.

Sandra asks…

How do I answer when an Angel Investor ask about market size?

I'm in the middle of completing a questionnaire by my Angel Investor. I'm trying to get funds to start up an online business selling high-heeled shoes for women. I could answer all of the questions, except for one: "What is the market size?" Do I need to be accurate about this? Is there a way to calculate market size? What is the right way to answer - without sounding vague or clueless? Thank you.

Our pick of the answers:

If you are serious about starting in the shoe business, and don't even know the basics of your market, or how to find the relevant info, you are nothing like ready to run such a business. Selling shoes involves major outlay because of the number of styles and sizes you need to carry. Don't do anything until you are much better informed.
