Maria asks…

What are good moccasin brands for men?

I'm looking for a nice, affordable, and comfortable moccasin that makes a statement as well. It should be hard soled so I can walk outside with them. Are there any particular brands held in prestige? I'm not a brand whore or anything, but I'm just wondering. I don't see many moccasins with logos on the heel or anything, so I don't think it really matters. I'm looking for a nice stylish moccasin.

Our pick of the answers:

The best moccasins are the ones that *you* like the most; sounds kind of obvious but when people think of "moccasins" there are many different pictures that can appear in each of our minds eyes. A lot has to do with how old you are and what you currently see as popular. If you have no idea what you're looking for or what strikes your fancy, do a an "image search" of "mens moccasins" in your favorite search engine. It'll help you see all the different styles and links to the various websites. Affordable is a relative term; yes, you can find less expensive moccasins out there and overall quality will be a reflection of their price. You may not want a pair of moccasins to last you for ten years or more but if you do, then moccasins of this caliber will cost significantly more initially. And one man's "affordable" is another man's "expensive". Do you have an appreciation for quality as in made here in the US of A? Or is "CHEAP" the overriding factor. Don't buy women's moccasins …regardless of the androgynous look they may have. Men's feet generally run wider than womens; a woman's moccasin worn by a man, unless he has very narrow feet, will feel very tight. A moccasin worn by a man ought to have a masculine look to it. I see a lot of young people wearing what amounts to bedroom slippers, fuzzy linings and plaid insides, and IMHO, it looks kinda silly. Just because a moccasin does not have a "hard sole" does not mean it is to be viewed as a house slipper. Many of the styles made by the companies listed below are all leather …to include the soles. But the leather used is so robust they will actually last longer than a "soled" moccasin. Of the listings below, I can personally vouch for Quoddy's double-soled Tracker Boot (I got my pair on eBay at considerable savings). Here are some of my choices: Quoddy moccasins (www.quoddy.com): These are handmade by American craftsmen in Maine. They are one of the absolute best moccasins made but they are also obscenely expensive. Dyer moccasins (carldyers.com): These are also handmade by American craftsmen in Indianna. They come in a very close second to the Quoddy's. Arrow moccasins (www.arrowmoc.com): These are handmade by American craftsmen in Massachussettes. Arrow mocs are probably the "best ban for the buck" in American handmade moccasins. Russell moccasins (www.russellmoccasin.com): These are handmade by American craftsmen in Wisconsin. Russell's are the ultimate custom-made moccasins you can buy and they are even more expensive than Quoddy's These companies I've listed above make the best moccasins; ones that will last you a *long* time and, when they finally do wear out, many can be refurbished (resoled). The Arrow moccasins are the most reasonably priced of the handmade mocs and will last almost, if not just as long, as all the rest of them. When you compare them to the cost of some of the cheaply made Chinese moccasins they are a steal. If you are looking for less expensive alternatives then look at the styles Minnetonka offers. I do not like to recommend them because Minnetonka used to make all their moccasins here in the US but a few years ago they quietly moved manufacturing "off shore" in places like the Dominican Republic and China ….and their prices have gone up to boot. I won't buy Minnetonka's anymore. Here are some Canadian outlets; Canadian moccasins are most often handmade by the indigenous tribes in the various provinces of Canada. I include them because it gives you an alternative to sending your money to China.
