Prior to Ronald Reagan's presidency, was the republican party as theocratic as they are now?
It seems like it was in the 80's that Reagan invited Jerry Falwell and his merry band of christian supremacists right into the government. Am I correct?

You are. In fact, prior to reagan's ascendancy, the only people who showed up in washington to protest roe v. Wade were the catholics. Reagan campaigned on an anti-civil rights, anti-women's rights, anti-working class platform, and conservative southern christian nationalists suddenly discovered the abortion issue and flocked to his banner. It took longer than he expected (thanks to 9-11 and inept democrats who could never pass up a chance to lose an election), but happen it has. The true conservatives have been thrown out of the GOP and all that is left are religious zealots and reactionary extremists. What i find most ironic is how reagan's supporters did everything they could to ban the practice of non-christian religions, but were strangely mute when nancy reagan consutled an astrologer to plan the president's travel schedules. More proof that they decline to criticize one of their own for a sin they'd happily burn anyone else at the stake for committing. Another irony is how many times reagan set foot in a church during the 8 years that he infested the oval office.... ZERO.
