Helen asks…
Any idea where I can get a hold of cheap combat boots?
I've had Dr. Martins but I really don't feel like spending that much money for another pair of boots. I've checked some of my local thrift shops but had no luck. I was also considering buying second hand ones offline too because they don't have to be broken in which means no blisters. Can you help me out here?

Laura asks…
What do I get my daughter to play dress up in?
I know that you can give them bead necklaces, hats, boas, what else do you give them, and where is the best place to get these things. Also how much of what do you give them?
Our pick of the answers:
Best and cheapest place is a church garage sale - prices are dirt cheap and you can find some truly unique outfits (church people don't see to throw anything out so you just may find a disco suit!) If you tell them why you want it they may go even cheaper - especially if the kids are with you and they look cute. Other than that ask friends and grandma and grandpa. Fill up a rubbermaid tub or toy box - every so often change a few items. And remember imagination doesn't need a whole lot of props - sometimes less is more. Some man's clothes, some womens clothes, a couple of hats, and a boa would be fun. I would not do the high heels as they trip and fall, but perhaps get them to make 'fancy shoes' with add ons from the craft shop such as sequines or stick on rhinestones, and maybe even decorate a pair of dad's old shoes. They will love them more because they made them. And some items that don't have any purpose. A square of fabric can become a super hero cape. A wooden spoon used to make a witches stew, or her broom stick. And only put things in you are willing to see destroyed as in the heat of the drama things tend to get stepped on or squished. And trust me on this one. The tiara they make out of sparkly pipecleaners (a must in any 6-10 year old kids play box in my mind) will serve them 100% better than the ones you buy in the toy store. They will increase their physical dexterity and problem solving abilities having to create some of their own stuff. If the purpose is fostering imagination, and not just having a 'cute' girly picture for the scrap book don't connect all the dots. Don't give them a princess outfit - let them figure out the lace table cloth wrapped around their waste looks regal. And a borrowed pot makes a great helmut for the knight. (some stuff to do different hairstyles is also fun in a dress up box). Anyhow. I am tired and rambling a bit. You must be a good mom to want to do this for your kids. Have fun, and just throw a few things in a box - they'll figure out the rest. The 'best' dress up outfit I ever saw was red tights over (and yes it was over) a pink gymnastics suit and a pillow case used as a cape. It was a site I'll never forget! Lol. But in her mind she was gorgeous and I would never tell her differently.
