Mandy asks…
Women's Suffrage?
It is an interesting question that, I think, far transcends gender, but the two examples of the question that I remember most have both come from women who, in essence, believe (perhaps somewhat tongue-in-cheek) that the privilege of voting ought to be retracted from the female population of America. Shortly after the re-election of Bill Clinton (vs. Bob Dole), Kate O'Beirne wrote an opinion piece in National Review in which she stated (and all of this is in essence, as I am reaching back in my memory, so if you are interested in specifics I would suggest getting the first couple or three issues right after the above-referenced election and perusing them till you find the article, but let's let my specifics that follow be "for the sake of argument") that exit polling of women had been conducted questioning them as to who they voted for and why. More than half of the women who voted for Clinton (and remember, it was in Clinton's second term that he was relying so heavily on "soccer moms" - so there were PLENTY of women who voted for him) identified him as the pro-life candidate. O'Beirne then went on to statistically allege that women, as a group, tend to be far less informed about the candidates that they vote for than are men, and that therefore they vote (as a group) based on their feelings, based on who is more attractive, or based on perceived popularity, usually by referencing such trusty sources as Oprah. Such shocking ignorance of major issues, so easily discernible, points to a basic problem with a voter - and such a voter doesn't know enough to have an informed opinion. O'Beirne then went on to assert a solution that was so shocking to me at the time that I have never forgotten reading this article to this day: take the vote away from women! And yes, O'Beirne's first name is KATE. Within the last year, an op-ed piece appeared in my local paper under the heading "I Am Woman, Hear Me Bore" by Ann Coulter. Once again, Coulter complains that women voters pose a threat to the republic because they (as a group) vote in patterns both wholly uninformed and unconstitutional. Her solution? Take the vote away from women. And yes, her first name is ANN. I am not taking a position (yet). I would LOVE to hear what some of you think about these two women's conclusions and their proposed solution. Isn't it true that votinig is not merely a privilege, but it is a responsibility? When one group shows that it is not living up to its responsibility, should it lose its attendant privilege (that is what happens to felons in the USA, isn't it?)? Thoughts?
Our pick of the answers:
In this country, voting is not a responsibility. It is a choice. If someone does not feel particularly interested in any of the proposed candidates, then they have the right not to vote. Who makes the decision on what constitutes making a 'responsible' choice? Who says people should not vote based on their feelings? Looks? Popularity? Who says? Who has said that one must vote based on this or that? People have the right, the RIGHT, in this country to vote HOWEVER they so chose. I disagree that women, as a whole, do not pay attention to politics. I, and all the women I know, are very much educated in the realm of politics and pay close attention to their platforms. How do women vote "unconstitutionally"? I think both these women's conclusions are sensationalist and quite frankly sexist. They are over generalizing, over simplifying the issue. I would agree the MOST people, MEN AND WOMEN, are not informed when they vote. It is not a threat to the nation, since both sexes have voted thusly in the past. I disagree with their conclusions and their reasons as to why they reached them. Basically what they are saying is "Women, as a whole, don't vote on what I think is important and on the WAY I think it's important so lets get rid of their choice." Ridiculous.
