Jenny asks…
Did the Battle of Gettysburg start because one of the armies were looking for shoes?
My history teacher said that one of the armies went into Gettysburg looking for shoes but when I looked it up online it said something different.
Our pick of the answers:
Sort of - the story about the Army of North Virginia entering Gettysburg looking for shoes comes from one source - General Heth, a Confederate general who was writing in 1877, over a decade after the battle. Jubal A. Early had been in Gettysburg a few days earlier and any available shoes and other supplies would have been taken at that time. Besides, sending two brigades on such a scavenger hunt would have been wasteful. Perhaps Heth thought the tradespeople of the town had hidden supplies from the first raid and he would return. My guess is that Jubal Early's men did seize some supplies, including boots/shoes, but probably took very little else, most of the supplies had been removed or were hidden, making Early's raid look a bit pointless. Heth perhaps entered Gettysburg sarcastically commenting that he was going to get shoes for his men.
Sandra asks…
What are some warm comfortable men's shoes/slippers to wear inside the house?
Also not looking to spend a huge amount of money. Also what pants to stay warm? Sweat pants i guess? Thanks Please list the type of shoes as well as shoe brand if there is a peticular good one.
Our pick of the answers:
Socks work great, no shoes needed inside the house. If your house is cold, get some good thermal socks and maybe thermal underwear to help keep warm.
