Ruth asks…
It is possible to wear high heels all day without hurting your feet? In my new job I have to wear heels all day, have any way to avoid me to stay with painful foot?
Quickly, you don't say how high you are talking about, so here are some general rules that I have figured out in my 25+ years of wearing high heels. Don't buy cheap shoes, spend a little more and feel the difference. Don't wear new shoes all day, wear them around the house first, get use to them before spending a whole day in the same pair. Bring a second pair to switch out during the day, no two pair are exactly the same. Buy new shoes late in the day, so they fit when your feet are their largest. Buy gel inserts, they really do help. Buy high heels with a slight platform under the toes, the better made ones have more cushioning for your feet hidden in the platform. Practice wearing them as much as you can, wear them all the time, around the house, doing chores, running errands on the weekends, that way your feet aren't in shock when you are at work all day. The more you wear them, the easier it gets, trust me. Don't start out with 6 inch ones, work your way up, start at whatever height you are comfortable with now, wear them and buy some a half inch or more higher, gradually wear them more and more until they feel normal, then repeat the pattern until you are in those fab looking 5 to 6 inch ones that are everywhere these days.
Donna asks…
I just brought new high heels and wedges. I am looking for good insoles to put them in because they sometimes give me pain.My question is do you know any good comfortable ones without any feet pain.
You can try these from stiletto hardware. I've read good things about them. Http://amzn.to/mbYeE4

OnlineSchools.com, a digital resource for online education from kindergarten to graduate school, recently launched "Celebrity U," a look at the college majors of 200 notable celebrities. Drawing from sources like Forbes and Buzzfeed.com, the infographic identifies five of the most popular majors among Hollywood's best: economics, English, history, political science, and psychology.
"Seeing the academic backgrounds and successes of celebrities helps to humanize them and make them more relatable," commented Boriana Trifonova, OnlineSchools.com spokesperson. "It's important for younger children and teens to understand that these famous faces have depth beyond the artistic talents that they're publically recognized for."
Aside from actors, the infographic highlights other well-knowns whose college education may surprise a few readers. For instance, Vinny Guadagnino, best known for getting his "GTL on" and "fist pumping" at MTV's Jersey Shore, graduated with a 3.9 GPA from CUNY College of Staten Island. Along with Guadagnino's surprising achievements, the infographic also features unexpected academic excellences (or lack thereof) from the likes of Bob Barker, Hugh Hefner and Barry Bonds.
"One important element that came from the research and development for this infographic is that people are able to major in one subject and go on to have a successful career in a completely unrelated field," Trifonova explains. "It goes to show that your major doesn't mold your career — you do."

Laura asks…
I really love vintage clothing, but its either hard to find or it's really expensive. Or I have to order it online and generally I don't have money in the bank haha. Have you seen anywhere selling pretty blouses? Or shoes? I'm dying for some good old fashioned boots. I've seen a real victorian pair but they we're far too expensive and I'd be scared to wear them. So I guess modern shoes will have to do haha.
You'll be better off going to the little boutiques or maybe goth shops, which do that kind of stuff. There's quite a bit around at the moment though on the high street if you keep your eye out. I saw a cropped military jacket in Asda the other day, weirdly enough, that was quite victorian-looking, Theres also a lot of boots with buckles across them and buttons down the sides - seen a couple in New Look - if you wear them with the right stuff they'll go with your look really well.
Maria asks…
I went to Disney World today, and I was on my feet for over 11 hours walking around the parks. I guess my shoes weren't the best to be doing this in. I have quite a few large blisters on each foot. None of them have popped yet; that's good right? I was just wondering if anyone had any quick relief techniques. I've got to be on my feet for over 6 hours tomorrow for work, and can't go in the pain they're causing right now... Thanks a lot.
Because you are going to be on your feet at work, the blisters are going to pop. Fluid will drain, and they may start to hurt. So, coat your feet in Vaseline petroleum jelly or a lot of thick lotion or cream today, if you have it. Then put on some heavy cotton socks. Get off your feet as much as possible for the day, and reapply the cream or petroleum jelly, and the socks before bedtime. By tomorrow, your feet should be feeling much better. Good luck. Repeat by the way when you get home from work.

I just don't quite understand where they draw the line between a rapist who commits several rapes, and a serial rapist. Is there really a difference? How do courts charge a person as a serial rapist? Here is the example I am referring to. He is a 17 year old male. He has raped 4 girls within the past 6 months. The girls ranged in age from 12-16. There are probably more rapes, but only 4 have been reported.
He's climbin in your windows He's snatchin your people up Tryna rape em so y'all need to Hide your kids, hide your wife Hide your kids, hide your wife Hide your kids, hide your wife And hide your husband cuz they're rapin everybody out here You don't have to come and confess We're lookin for you We gon find you we gon find you So you can run and tell that, Run and tell that Run and tell that, homeboy Home, home, homeboy We got your t-shirt You done left fingerprints and all You are so dumb You are really dumb--for real You are really, really, really, really so dumb I was attacked by some idiot in the projects So dumb, so dumb, so dumb, so Bout 5'9", 5'10", Coffee complexion Low cut like a Caesar with some little waves in his head Clean cut, very smooth face Seein my sister when i walked in He had his hands around her neck First thing was to pull him off of her And that's what i did Well, obviously we have a rapist in Lincoln Park Are you serious, my boy? I got a pair of nine west silver heels for $15(!!!!great deal!!!!) and i was hoping to use them for prom/homecoming etc since silver goes with everything. but then after i got home, i realized that it might be kinda tacky. these are the shoes http://69.84.153.38/l/Nine-West-Champagne-Silver.jpg
They're not tacky! Silver is a gorgeous colour, especially for shoes.
Jenny asks…
i need serious help on finding the width of my shoe! im shopping for shoes online at nine west. and i dont know if i am a W (wide), N (narrow), or M (??). i am a size 8 tho. and i just want to know the different between narrow and wide. r they like opposites???
Check the size listed in the shoes in your closet. If any are marked W, and they feel too wide, then you need an M. If any are marked N, and they feel too narrow, you need an M. If you buy online, there are often ratings listed by buyers of the style you like. Read those ratings to find out how buyers feel about the width of the shoe. If you are still unsure, buy from an internet shoe place that provides free shipping both ways.

Living Water International, an organization that has sponsored 14,000 rural water well projects in 70 developing nations, will devote its 2014 Annual Fund Raising Gala to honoring the role played by women in the success of their mission. Living Water International President Emeritus Jerry Wiley recently announced the gala to Sharon Kleyne, founder of Bio Logic Aqua Resarch.
The globally syndicated Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water® radio show, with host Sharon Kleyne, is heard on VoiceAmerica and Apple iTunes. Kleyne is Founder of Bio Logic Aqua Research, a fresh water, atmospheric and water technology research and product development center. Natures Tears® EyeMist®, a 100% pure water mist for dry eye, is the Research Center's global signature product.
Living Water International was founded in 1990 to bring safe and reliable water to rural areas in developing nations in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. As of 2014, with an annual budget of $ 28 million, the organization had constructed well over 14,000 water wells. Jerry Wiley, PhD, was President of Living Water International for 12 years and is now President Emeritus. The current president is Gary Evans. Wiley made the announcement while being interviewed on the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water® radio show of June 23, 2014.
Women are the primary beneficiaries of the work of Living Water International, says Wiley. They also play a major role in our organization, from local villages in Kenya, to field staff, to the Board of Directors in Houston, TX. The Living Water International web page depicts a young African woman and the slogan, "Free to Dream" (http://water.cc/).
In rural villages in developing nations, according to Wiley, where safe, reliable water is difficult to obtain, women and children tend to suffer the most because the task of fetching water each day is a traditional role of women, who usually bring their children with them. Fetching water may involve walking several miles and returning with ten gallons of water in a jug on their head. Should they drop the water, they must go back and get more. The water they carry is often contaminated and unsafe.
This daily necessity prevents women and children from attending school. The task also prevents women from becoming involved in the community or assuming leadership roles.
Safe and abundant water is so essential to a community that without it, economic development is nearly impossible. Water is necessary for drinking, cooking, agriculture, sanitation and industry. Globally, says Wiley, someone dies from water-related causes, including water borne diseases and dehydration, every 15 seconds.
In areas with no treatment facilities, Kleyne notes, wells are the safest and most reliable water source. The presence of a hand-pumped water well in village, says Wiley, almost immediately improves health, reduces disease and mortality, and promotes economic development.
When a village is scheduled to o receive a well, according to Wiley, a local committee is formed, with the assistance of Living Water International and/or other organizations with whom LWI partners. The local committee oversees the construction and equitable use of the well, maintenance and repair, and a program to educate the community on hygiene, sanitation and hydration.
Women play a major role on these committees in virtually every community, says Wiley. In many cases, this is the first time that local women have undertaken a leadership role. Many of these women, Kleyne adds, have gone on to start small businesses enterprises. According to the African Development Bank, says Kleyne, 48% of small business entrepreneurs in Kenya, a major operations center for Living Water International, are women.
Women also play a major role on the field staff, executive staff and Board of Directors of Living Water International, according to Wiley.
Living Water International's 2014 Fund Raising Gals, with the theme title "Celebrating the Women," will take place on October 3, 2014 at the Hilton Americas, Houston Texas. Website: https://www.water.cc/gala.

My mother needs 2" block heels, but has swollen feet so also needs wide-fitting shoes. The company that used to make shoes she could wear (Elmdale, Lady X, etc) has apparently gone into liquidation. She is on her last pair of shoes and we have visited LOADS of shoe shops trying to find something that will fit. We find either wide fitting/Velcro fitting shoes with low heels, or heels with straps that won't fasten over her poor feet. Any ideas anyone, for suppliers of classic shoes that might fit the bill (and her feet)?

Linda asks…
I was going to buy some shoes online, and for the size it appeared in a list of 3Y-7Y, does that simply mean size 3 and size 7 shoes, or does the Y's signify something else ?
Youth shoes flow right up into adult sizes . . . Kind of . . . Youth sizes are unisex (girls and boys are the same). Then, the youth sizes move into the mens sizes. Consider it this way: 3Y-7Y could be looked at as really small mens shoes. Since women's shoes are smaller than mens (size 9w vs 9m), they don't roll over as easily. This is also normally why stores don't sell mens shoes in sizes smaller than 8 (cause that's considered youth).

Susan asks…
As a straight man I am a CD. Mostly at home because of what society has told us that things are suppose to be a certain way. Women can wear mens clothes and shoes and noone says a thing. Why is it such a double standard?
It's just the way everyone (well, not EVERYONE) was brought up and they were conditioned to see it that way. It's unfortunate, but people are scared of "different" and change.
Lizzie asks…
I dont want to let down the man who invited me. It's to a fancy Hollywood dinner and award ceremony the invite says black tie and I don't want to look and feel out of place, am in my 30s only 5 feet tall have nice shape but thick legs so short dresses are out of the question. My breasts are too large to wear anything strapless and my back has too many moles to wear open back. Also what type of shoes and hair style? I have long hair.
Wear heels that are no taller than 3 inches, too high makes super short girls look kinda funny, like they're playing dress up almost. But if your dress is long enough you could do higher, as long as you can walk in them. I found some dresses, idk what your budget is but you can always take these as ideas and find some in your price range. The Alcohol Professor has created 7 amazing cocktails to drink during the 86th Annual Oscar's where the best in film meet the best in cocktails.
Cocktail 1
"The Red Carpet Smash"
Red Carpet Smash, by Abigail Gullo
Abigail Gullo, Sobou, New Orleans
Says Abigail: This drink is Red Carpet ready for the Oscars and all the big award shows this season. It's sweet, hot and juicy with a hint of bitterness, just like all those just happy to be nominated.
44 ml (1.5 oz) Cathead Honeysuckle Vodka
22 ml (.75 oz) Campari
15 ml (.5 oz) Cinnamon syrup
15 ml (.5 oz) Pineapple juice
15ml (.5 oz) Grapefruit juice
Healthy pinch of mint
Shake all ingredients hard to smash the mint. Strain over fresh ice into a rocks glass and garnish with a lemon wheel and a sprig of mint.
Cocktail 2
"Planet Earth is Blue and There's Nothing I Can Do"
Amanda Schuster
For the movie Gravity it seemed fitting to have a drink with a floating ingredient, and a tribute to Sir Isaac Newton.
37 ml (1.25 oz) Bourbon, such as Basil Hayden's
7 ml (.25 oz) Apple brandy or Calvados
15 ml (.5 oz) Fresh lemon juice
barspoon of Honey Syrup (equal parts honey and hot water, dissolved)
Hard Apple Cider
scant barspoon Peychaud's bitters
Shake Bourbon, brandy, lemon juice and syrup with ice until well-chilled. Pour into pre-chilled flute glass. Top with cider. Carefully float the bitters of the top in an even layer.
Cocktail 3
"The Reinvention"
An ode to Matthew McConaughey, who was always great, but in the past year proved himself to be among the greatest. Once a mostly shirtless whippersnapper with Southern charm, now channeling that crazy energy and killer bod into new and interesting roles. Here's a sophisticated Tequila drink for the Texas native.
44 ml (1.5 oz) Reposado Tequila, such as Milagro
15 ml deep Amaro, such as Brovo Amaro #14, (double gold winner in the 2013 Ny International Spirits Competition) or Rabarbaro Zucca
15 ml Sweet Vermouth
dash Bittermen's Burlesque Bitters (an ode to Magic Mike, but also for added aromatics)
Add all ingredients to mixing glass with ice. Stir until well chilled. Strain into chilled coupe glass. Don't garnish this bad boy, it's fine just as it is. But have a cherry if you're hungry.
Cocktail 4
"The Main Event"
Logan Ronkainen, Trattoria Il Mulino, New York City
It looks tedious, but the infusion and syrup are well worth it and pretty straightforward. If you happen to be in the NYC area, this cocktail is also served at the restaurant.
60 ml (2 oz) Popcorn Infused aged Rhum Agricole, the restaurant uses Damoiseau VSOP 1
30 ml (1 oz) Caramel Syrup 2
1 egg, whole
Top with lager style beer, the restaurant uses Peroni, medalist in the 2013 NY International Beer Competition
Garnish with a rim of caramel and gold dusted popcorn (optional)
Dip the outside rim of a chilled highball glass into the caramel syrup and roll on the gold dusted popcorn crumbs. Add rhum, syrup and egg to a shaking tin. Dry shake without ice for 15-20 seconds. Add ice and shake another 15-20 seconds. Double strain with a hawthorne and mesh strainer into a chilled highball glass. Top with beer.
How to Make Popcorn Infused Rum
Popcorn Infused Rhum
In a large container, add about a gallon of popped popcorn (better if buttered) to 1 bottle of Rhum (750ML). Let infuse for 4 hours, stirring occasionally. Strain popcorn out.
How To Make Caramel Syrup
550 ml (1 pint dry) Sugar
473 ml (1 pint liquid) Hot (boiling) Water
Add sugar a bit at a time, 4 times total, to a saucepan on medium heat. Melt each addition of sugar before adding the next. Once sugar turns brown/caramel colored (reaching upwards of 300 degrees!) SLOWLY add hot water. It will steam up a lot at first so be careful! Bring up to a boil to ensure all caramel is dissolved. Let cool before transferring to a storage container.
BONUS: While you have your Popcorn Infused Damoiseau and Caramel Syrup… make yourself a Caramel-Corn Old Fashioned. Take 60 ml (2 oz) of the Rhum and a little less than a 15 ml (.5 oz) of the syrup, stir with ice to chill and enjoy!
Cocktail 5
"The Belfort"
Josh Wortman, Añejo, New York City
An ode to the Wolf of Wall Street, Martin Scorcese's cultural exploration of Wall Street greed and excess through the sleazy shysterism of Jordan Belfort's Long Island pump-and-dump shop, Stratton Oakmont. The only way to toast to this masterpiece of self-indulgence and depravity is with this classic, booze-filled, alcohol-delivery-mechanism known as a Long Island Iced Tea.
Just because it gets you buzzed fast, doesn't mean it can't be delicious! Using high-quality, dry, white spirits, fresh juice and non-HFCS Mexican Coke may alleviate post-Oscar night pain. Warning: Do not consume with more than one Quaalude.
22 ml (.75 oz) Vodka with attitude, such as Ivanabitch
22 ml (.75 oz) dry Gin
22 ml (.75 oz) Caña Brava Rum
22 ml (.75 oz) Tapatio Blanco Tequila
7 ml (.25 oz) Combier Liqueur d'Orange
15 ml (.5 oz) Fresh Lemon Juice
15 ml (.5 oz) Simple Syrup
Top with Mexican Coca Cola
Add spirits, lemon juice and simple syrup into shaker. Shake vigorously with ice until very cold. Strain into tall collins glass over fresh ice. Top with Mexican Coke. Garnish with lemon wedge.
Cocktail 6
"Fun Coupons"
By Pat Halloran
First, put on your bespoke suit. Then find someone to make you the following:
Rim a glass (nothing too extreme, a Zalto will be fine) with uncut cocaine. Put in the fridge to chill. Then combine the following in a mixing glass:
60 ml (2 oz) Bas-Armangac (such as Chateau de Laubade 1893, but if one must slum it the 1900 is considered acceptable)
60 ml (2 oz) Vintage Green Chartreuse VEP
3 dashes Quaalude tincture (dissolve a bottle of quaaludes in a few oz. of Everclear, bottle and store)
Strain this into the cocaine-rimmed glass and garnish with a slice of truffle which has been studded with Beluga caviar. Before taking a single sip, throw this – glass and all – at the face of an FBI agent and then have another one made for you immediately afterwards.
The Alcohol Professor was created by Adam Levy to share with his friends what beer, wine and spirits to drink from around the world. Adam Levy is also the founder of the New York International Spirits Competition, New York International Beer Competition and New York International Wine Competition.
in 2014 Mr. Levy has expanded internationally with the Berlin International Spirits Competition to be held March 2nd 2014.

How did the men and women of the 1930s dress like?
What Were They Wearing in the 1930s? By Carol Stanley, eHow Contributor The great depression was during the 30s. Clothes during the 1930s reflected the onset of and recovery from the Great Depression. Luxury fabrics were scarce and were replaced with synthetic fabrics such as rayon and nylon. People became more active, wearing shorts and tops when outdoors. Movie icons greatly influenced men and women's fashions. Styles of French designers Coco Chanel and Madeleine Vionnet were popular with affluent women. Zippers and elastic surfaced during the 30s, replacing buttons and hooks. Women's Clothing Daytime dresses for women were often bright color solids and prints and mid-calf length. Women also loved soft wool crepes that clung to the body, as well as knife-pleated skirts. Short waist-line jackets were popularly worn over dresses. Women enjoyed wearing dresses with tight bodices to exaggerate their waistlines. Blouses and sweaters with wrap skirts were part of women's uniforms for day wear. Nylon was often the fabric of the day used for blouses, dresses and skirts. For casual wear, women wore simple house dresses while doing their daily chores and dressier house dresses were worn for going out, playing cards and visiting with friends. Women's Evening Attire and Accessories Fancy evening attire was often designed for the rich who did not have to worry about shortages of suitable fabrics. Dresses with low-cut, draped necklines and fabrics of metallic lame, plastic sequins and glass beads were styles of choice. Backless dresses -- ankle length -- were enhanced with fur stoles and wraps. Women wore long gloves to match their handbags and hats. Pillbox and turban style hats were worn by women when going out. Fabric flowers adorned hats and dresses. Shoes sported rounded toes with wide thick medium heels. Ankle straps were popular for evening wear. Casual shoes included slip on shoes and lace-up, oxford types. Men and Boys Both men and boys wore three-piece suits in dark fabrics and subtle stripes, with wide shoulders and lapels. Men wore white butterfly-collared shirts with dark, plain, thin ties. Pants became more tailored and narrowed towards the cuffs. For evening wear during the middle 30s, men opted for white jackets with a cummerbund which replaced the waistcoat. Men wore fedora hats as well as a variety of berets and top hats. Boys wore knickers with button-down shirts and vest sweaters. Argyle socks of knicker length could be purchased in bright colors and patterns. Girls' Clothes Young girls' clothes were influenced by movie icon Shirley Temple. Dresses had puffed sleeves, small collars and short skirts flowing from the shoulders. Young girls occasionally wore shorts for playtime. Shoes were flat with buckles. High school girls wore mid-calf length skirts with very baggy sweaters. Fabrics were scarce so many moms were busy sewing with whatever fabric was on hand. Girls wore moccasins with no socks and saddle shoes with short socks. Though few teenagers were part of the workforce, their work attire was simple house dresses or long skirts with blouses and pumps.

OMG! I love that dress!! I was actually gunna buy it myself for my prom recently but ran outta time and ended up having to go to a store nearby. The white one is absolutely gorgeous and white and gold always looks great together. I would say gold pumps would look really good with the dress because of the gold accents on the dress. Tell me anything you know please!! My search engine is really messed up so I can't find anything, also tell me what you know about his election/debate/campaign process Thanks!!
Zachary Taylor (November 24, 1784 – July 9, 1850) was an American military leader and the twelfth President of the United States. Known as "Old Rough and Ready," Taylor had a 40-year military career in the U.S. Army, serving in the War of 1812, Black Hawk War, and Second Seminole War after achieving fame while leading U.S. Troops to victory at several critical battles of the Mexican-American War. A Southern slaveholder who opposed the spread of slavery to the territories, he was uninterested in politics but was recruited by the Whig Party as their nominee in the 1848 presidential election. In the election Taylor defeated the Democratic nominee, Lewis Cass, and became the first U.S. President never to hold any prior office. As president, Taylor urged settlers in New Mexico and California to by-pass the territorial stage and draft constitutions for statehood, setting the stage for the Compromise of 1850. Taylor died of acute gastroenteritis just 16 months into his term. Vice President Millard Fillmore became President. Zachary Taylor was the third of nine children of Richard Taylor and Sarah Strother. Taylor's family was aristocratic: James Madison was a second cousin and Robert E. Lee was a third cousin once removed (through Colonel Richard Lee the Immigrant). In his infancy, Taylor's family moved to Kentucky, where Taylor grew up on a plantation. He was known as "Little Zack" and was educated by private tutors. He is one of the descendants of King Edward III of England [1]. Taylor met Margaret "Peggy" Mackall Smith of Maryland in early 1810, and they were married on June 21, 1810. They had one son and five daughters, two of whom died in infancy because of malaria. * Ann Taylor (born April 9, 1811) * Sarah Knox "Knoxie" Taylor (born March 6, 1814) * Octavia P. [edit] Military career General Zachary Taylor and his horse. General Zachary Taylor and his horse. On May 3, 1808, Taylor joined the U.S. Army, receiving a commission as a first lieutenant of the Seventh Infantry Regiment. He was ordered west into Indiana Territory, taking command at the Battle of Fort Harrison; he was promoted to captain in November 1810. During the War of 1812, Taylor became known as a talented military commander. Assigned to command Fort Harrison on the Wabash River, at the northern edge of present-day Terre Haute, Indiana, he successfully commandeered a small force of soldiers and civilians to stave off a British-inspired attack by about 500 Native Americans between September 4 and September 15. The Battle of Fort Harrison, as it became known, has been referred to as the "first American land victory of the War of 1812." Taylor received a brevet promotion to major on October 31, 1812. Taylor was promoted to lieutenant colonel on April 20, 1819, and colonel on April 5, 1832. Taylor served in the Black Hawk War (May-August 1832) and the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). During the Seminole War, Taylor fought at the Battle of Lake Okeechobee and received a brevet promotion to brigadier general in January 1838. It was here he gained his nickname "Old Rough and Ready" for his rumpled clothes and wide-brimmed straw hat. On May 15, 1838, Taylor was promoted commanding general of all U.S. Forces in Florida. James K. Polk sent the Army of Occupation under Taylor's command to the Rio Grande in 1846. After Mexico sent a cavalry unit and attacked Taylor's troops (and additionally killed 16 American soldiers), Polk urged Congress to declare the Mexican-American War. In that conflict Taylor won additional important victories at Monterrey and Buena Vista and became a national hero. Polk kept Taylor in northern Mexico, disturbed by his informal habits of command and his affiliation with the Whig Party. He sent an expedition under General Winfield Scott to capture Mexico City. Taylor, incensed, thought that "the battle of Buena Vista opened the road to the city of Mexico and the halls of Montezuma, that others might revel in them." [edit] Election of 1848 Main article: U.S. Presidential election, 1848 Taylor/Fillmore campaign poster Taylor/Fillmore campaign poster Taylor received the Whig nomination for President in 1848. Millard Fillmore of New York was chosen for the Vice Presidential nominee. Like many other army officers, Taylor was nonpolitical and had never voted. His homespun ways and his status as a war hero were political assets. Taylor defeated Lewis Cass, the Democratic candidate, and Martin Van Buren, the Free Soil candidate. To the astonishment of Whigs, Taylor ignored their platform, as historian Michael Holt explains: Taylor was equally indifferent to programs Whigs had long considered vital. Publicly, he was artfully ambiguous, refusing to answer queries about his views on banking, the tariff, and internal improvements. Privately, he was more forthright. The idea of a national bank "is dead, and will not be revived in my time." In the future the tariff "will be increased only for revenue"; in other words, Whig hopes of restoring the protective tariff of 1842 were vain. There would never again be surplus federal funds from public land sales to distribute to the states, and internal improvements "will go on in spite of presidential vetoes." In a few words, that is, Taylor pronounced an epitaph for the entire Whig economic program.[1] [edit] Presidency President Taylor and his CabinetFrom left to right: William B. [edit] Policies Although Taylor had subscribed to Whig principles of legislative leadership, he was not inclined to be a puppet of Whig leaders in Congress. He ran his administration in the same rule-of-thumb fashion with which he had fought Indians. Under Taylor's administration the United States Department of the Interior was organized, although the department had been activated under President Polk's last day in office. He appointed former Treasury Secretary Thomas Ewing the first Secretary of the Interior. [edit] The Compromise of 1850 The slavery issue dominated Taylor's short term. Although he owned slaves, he took a moderate stance on the territorial expansion of slavery, angering fellow Southerners. Taylor urged settlers in New Mexico and California to draft constitutions and apply for statehood, bypassing the territorial stage. New Mexico was too small to act but California—which had high population growth from the gold rush—wrote a constitution that did not allow slavery; it was approved by the voters and a new state government took over in December 1849 without Congressional approval. Southerners were furious with Taylor and with California. In February 1850, Taylor held a stormy conference with Southern leaders who threatened secession. He told them that if necessary to enforce the laws, he personally would lead the Army. Persons "taken in rebellion against the Union, he would hang ... With less reluctance than he had hanged deserters and spies in Mexico." He never wavered. Henry Clay then proposed a complex Compromise of 1850. Taylor died as it was being debated. (The Clay version failed but another version did pass under the new president, Millard Fillmore.) General Zachary Taylor in uniform. The cause of Zachary Taylor's death is not well understood, nor is it well documented. On July 4, 1850, Taylor was diagnosed by his physicians with cholera morbus, a term that included diarrhea and dysentery but not true cholera. Cholera, typhoid fever, and food poisoning have all been indicated as the source of the president's ultimately fatal gastroenteritis. More specifically, a hasty snack of iced milk, cold cherries and pickled cucumbers consumed at an Independence Day celebration might have been the culprit.[2] By July 9, Taylor was dead. In 1991, Taylor's body was exhumed, and Larry Robinson and Frank Dyer conducted an autopsy at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. At the exhumation, observers noted that Taylor's body, while somewhat decomposed, was still instantly recognizable as the 12th President--Taylor's brow ridge remained intact. Investigating the possibility of assassination by means of deliberate poisoning, Dyer and Robinson detected traces of arsenic and sent the results to a Kentucky medical examiner, who determined the quantity of arsenic present -- there is a faint amount of arsenic present naturally in the human body -- was several hundred times less than there would have been had he been poisoned with arsenic.[2] Despite these findings, assassination theories have not been entirely put to rest. Michael Parenti devoted a chapter in his controversial 1999 book History as Mystery to what he called "The Strange Death of Zachary Taylor." In it he speculates that Taylor was assassinated and that his autopsy was botched. Taylor postage stamp Taylor postage stamp There is some strong evidence that Taylor died from complications of heat stroke. On July 4, 1850, the weather in Washington was hot and rather humid. Taylor was there to preside over ceremonies at the laying of the cornerstone of the Washington Monument. Taylor was sporting a thick coat, vest, high-collared shirt, and a top hat. Shortly after arriving, Taylor complained that he was very thirsty. He went to the reception table and downed a large amount of water directly from a pitcher. Since the water was sitting in the sun, the idea of cholera is a possibility. But Taylor exhibited classic symptoms of heat stroke, particularly red, flushed skin on the face. Records also indicate that Taylor was having trouble walking and exhibiting slurred speech. At no time while outside did anyone loosen or remove Taylor's clothing. Only after returning to the White House was some of his clothing loosened. It was only a short time before Taylor collapsed.[citation needed] At this point his clothing was removed, but internal organs had already been damaged. In fact, his doctors were mystified as to the cause of multiple organ failure. Medical sciences had not addressed heat stroke and the internal damage caused by it. According to author Charles Panati, Taylor actually awoke briefly and said- "I should not be surprised if this were to result in my death." He took a few sips of iced milk, again adding to the possibility of cholera. He lapsed again into unconsciousness and died on July 9, 1850. Taylor is buried in Louisville, Kentucky, at what is now the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery. [edit] Surviving family * Taylor's son Richard became a Confederate Lieutenant General, while his daughter Sarah Knox Taylor (1814–1835) had married future President of the Confederate States Jefferson Davis three months before her death of malaria. * Taylor's brother, Joseph Pannill Taylor, was a Brigadier General in the Union Army during the Civil War. (Joseph P. Taylor's son Joseph Hancock Taylor was a US Colonel in the Civil War and was also a son-in-law of Union General Montgomery C. Meigs). * Taylor's niece Emily Ellison Taylor was the wife of Confederate General Lafayette McLaws. [edit] Trivia * Taylor's term of service was scheduled to begin on March 4, 1849, but as this day fell on a Sunday, Taylor refused to be sworn in until the following day. Vice President Millard Fillmore was also not sworn in on that day. Most scholars believe that according the U.S. Constitution, Taylor's term began on March 4, regardless of whether he had taken the oath or not. * Taylor always preferred old and slovenly clothes (including his unique straw hat) to military uniforms, leading to his nickname, "Old Rough and Ready." * Taylor had a stutter. * Taylor was a poor writer and had difficulty spelling. * Taylor was the last Veteran of the War of 1812 to serve as President (the others were Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, and John Tyler); the only Veteran of the Second Seminole War as President; and the first Veteran from either the Black Hawk War (the other was Abraham Lincoln) or the Mexican-American War (the others were Franklin Pierce and Ulysses Grant) to become President. * In 1942, a Liberty ship named the SS Zachary Taylor was launched. The ship was scrapped in 1961. * Second cousin of James Madison.
