Maria asks…
Has anyone ever heard the term Handitard before? What does it mean?
At work today a customer needed a pair slip-on shoes for a plane flight. He needed wide shoes but none of our slip-ons came in wide. So I suggested he try a velcro shoe instead, for ease of use on the plane. You know that voice in your head that tells you not to do something because something bad might happen. Well mine spoke up and said not to suggest the velcro shoes. But it seemed like such a good logical idea at the time, so I ignored the thought and I pitched the idea to him thinking he would go for it. Most people do. But then he said "No, I'm not using those shoes. They're for handitards". Then he started chuckling. That's right "Handitards". I'm not even sure of what that term meant, I never heard the term before, but I suddenly felt a very sharp, very quick, very strong, sudden, violent, surge of anger in me. I felt like ripping the guy in two and had no idea why. Well, I mean I know why. I have mild cp and wear velcro shoes, so I guess I took it personally. But he didn't see my shoes, and my cp is so mild that others never notice it. Anyhow, thank god I went into shock at first, otherwise I probably would've beat the sh*t out of him. Normally it takes a lot to get me to that point, except when people degrade handicapped people. Something about it just turns me into a raging beast. And for some reason, Handitard, triggered that part of me. I had both the GM and Director in today, so I did my best to stay composed afterwards. I didn't say a word, I tried to pretend not to care, but I ended up having to walk off the sales floor to cool my jets down. He didn't say it rudely, but he said it so matter-of-factly, that it just sounded so extremely prejudiced in nature to me, that I got insulted by it. But since I never heard the term before, I wasn't sure. I was mad, definitely, but I wasn't sure if my anger was justified or if I was just taking this word out of context and turning it into something it's not. So I just shut my trap and walked away. This was at 2 pm today, It's now 1:30 am, and I'm still fuming over this stupid comment that I've never heard of before. Was I wrong to get pissed? Does Handitard actually mean something else? Or does it mean how it sounded? Should have decked him, or at least chewed his a** out? Or did I do the right thing by walking away? What do you think? Have you ever hear the term before? Did I take it out of context? What would you have done if you were there in my place?
Our pick of the answers:
Handitard is a derogatory slang word made from the words "handicapped" and "retard" and used as an insult. You had every right to be angry at him for saying it. However, I think you did the right thing by walking away, as you could have gotten into serious trouble had you decked him or chewed him out. You might have lost your job. Had this been somewhere else than at your work, I think you should have chewed him out, but under the circumstances the best thing to do was to walk away. You handled the situation correctly.

Are these good prices for yard sale?
I'm joining a friend at his yard sale. I have quite a few items of clothing, all in style and in good condition. Got a few electronics too. I was thinking of using this pricing. Jeans: $5 (Chaps, Levi etc) Shorts: $3 (Chaps, Banana Republic, mostly Khaki's with a few jean shorts) T Shirts: $2 (Mostly Graphic T's, Old Navy style) LS Button Shirts: $3 (various) Shoes: $2 (new/used tennis) Boots: $5 ( used Timbaland) Using this, I'm guessing to make around $200 if I sold all the clothes and maybe around $250 with the electronics. Based on this basic information, do you recommend any price changes? Perhaps lowering the jeans to $3?
