Your Questions About Women's Platforms

Sandra asks…

How has the abortion issue shaped the political landscape in the U.S?

If you removed the abortion issue from the picture, how different would our politics be? No more presidential platforms based on abortion, no more votes based on a candidates views on abortion. And since abortion is a women's health issue, is this a sign of things to come? (like more female involvement/representation in government). More people than ever are discussing the pros and cons of a woman president, and the lack of viable candidates every election. Are we ready for a woman president? Or perhaps a female vice-president? It's a hypothetical question. I know you can't get rid of the issue, but IF it was a non-issue, what would people petition their government for?

Our pick of the answers:

Even if you removed the abortion issue, you would still have the religion issue, the gay rights issue, and the gun issue. Unfortunately, if you tell some people that you love God, hate gays, and love guns, that's enough to win their support. And for that reason, the Republicans would still carry the red states. I believe that most Americans are OK with the idea of having a female president or vice president. Unfortunately, however, I seriously doubt that Hillary Clinton would be electable, because a lot of people are still threatened by strong women who defy commonly held stereotypes about the way women are supposed to act. Many of these people are OK with there being a female president or vice president only as long as she conforms to conventional standards of femininity.

Linda asks…

Why do Canadian political parties discriminate against men?

I see various parties' platforms call for 'gender equality' but it's really hatred for men. They call for: - affirmative action for women (men suffer economically more than women do) - funding for women's shelters that ban men - funding for domestic violence organizations that refuse to help male victims - giving parties more money per vote if they have a woman candidate - support for Status of Women which considers fathers' rights groups to be hate crime groups (courts almost always force men to pay child support after a divorce) Meanwhile, the Toronto Star writes an article calling female candidates superior, and all-candidate meetings are hosted by women's university student organizations (despite less men in university). Who should men vote for?

Our pick of the answers:

I'm female and I agree with you. It's a shame what has happened today, where companies have to have a certain percentage of women thereby forcing capable, qualified men to lose out on jobs. It's ridiculous. Anyway, Liberals and NDP are leftists so they are definitely going to be more "feminist". Conservative all the way! Also I didn't know what a previous poster said about the grant for male abuse victims...that's be the Conservatives :)
